He wasn't a Catholic once he reached maturity; but you're right that the Catholic Church wouldn't put so much effort into distancing themselves from Hitler, if Hitler wasn't Hitler.

He was neither Christian, nor atheist, nor pagan; probably best described as an opportunist with a fair amount of interest in religious philosophy.

I think Hitler was just one of those guys that wanted to tell people whatever they wanted to hear, it'd be a stretch to say he had any real deep seated religious beliefs.

I would say Hitler used Christianity as a vice. Also, that he may have stuck with it simply as perhaps a way to find solace in it in the future.

Speculation about his personal theology or beliefs means nothing. The Catholic Church quite happily declares that everyone that is a member of the Church and has not formally left to be a Catholic, they are not worried about if that person has a crisis of faith or holds views that are not fully in line with mainstream Catholic theology.

A big part of catholic theology is that once baptized, you're always technically part of the church. This isn't some "once saved, always saved" stuff; but rather those baptized in the church can never renounce it.

So I think he's going for the futility of Catholics saying that Hitler renounced the church, saying he wasn't a catholic by the end, when you can never actually renounce the church sacramentally by their own theology.

Hitler never renounced the Catholic Church, having doubts in private doesn't count as renouncing the Church. I bet even the current pope has some doubts in private.
