I have a 10 page paper on the Cold War due in around 48 hours, for my fourth year politic science/history course.
For the life of me I can't decide on a topic so I can start writing. The focus is meant to be on an event and the actors that were involved in it (ie. McNamara in Tonkin) but otherwise it's super vague.
Who are your favorite characters/events in the Cold War? I need inspiration
The wall falling.

To be honest we're only just arriving there in terms of course material so I'd rather avoid such a late topic.
Right now I'm leaning towards the Missile Crisis as my topic and using the ExComm tapes as one of my primary sources but I can't really come up with a compelling thesis for it
The wall going up
what about Honecker/Ulbricht and the wall going up...
Apparently (meaning I just heard it from someone) when US Ambassador John Peurifoy was overseeing one of the many coups orchestrated by the US government during the Cold War he heard a commotion with his guards outside the meeting room door. In response, Peurifoy slowly pulled back his suit jacket to reveal to the regime's diplomat the Colt revolver he was carrying in a chest holster. The diplomat apparently barked some order to one of his staff who rushed into the other room where things quickly quieted down. Negotiations over the US' backing of the coup then continued.

Do it on the Soviet war in Afghanistan.
Operation Gladio, Propaganda 2, RAF, Deep State in Turkey, years of Lead in Italy.
Your Professor is most likely a leftie, so he'll like the CIA doing shady shit in Europe.
If not that, think about writing it on influence of USSR and USA on middle east politics, Iran-Iraq war, Iran-Contra affair, etc.

> The prosecution of Japan for war crimes by the USSR, while the US claims its propoganda
> Egypt playing both sides for money and aid
> All the proxy wars
> Space race is always fun
> Russia being a constant critic of american civil rights while simultaniously commiting human rights violations (albeit indiscriminantly)
Honestly the cold war gets so much historical coverage, but the internal changes occuring in both countries at that time was way more interesting.

The Berlin Wall going up and down, Europe detente, basically if i were you, I would try to talk about other parts of the world besides US and USSR.
