Basica Yue and Wu have been at war ever since Wu wronged the erstwhile king of Yue and Goujian never forgave Wu. Supposedly Goujian hated Wu so much he studied statesmanship and military arts 24/7, drinking bile-laced tea, sitting on irritating straw mats, and stabbing himself with a pin to keep him from sleeping.
