Europe was full of swamps up until the modern era. Think 1800's. Over the course of centuries europeans drained the swamps for obvious reasons.
It seems more than likely to me that there were probably crocodiles and other (perhaps unknown) reptiles within Europe's vast forests in the Middle Ages and prior. It's also known that Nile crocodiles sometimes ended up in Greece in ancient times, but the Greeks knew them as such because of their contacts with Egypt.
However, imagine a medieval knight stumbling upon a fucking huge pissed off reptile in say France. Thus, dragons.
That sounds reasonable to me. But I'm very suspicious about everything. I mean, those old drawings of dragons sometimes eerily look like modern dinosaur interpretations. Something is very "wrong" about our science or understanding of time as such.
