As others said, for a long time they did have a common border.
There where the Habsburg Netherlands (Spanish then Austrian), the County of Bourgogne and Spain itself to the South.
Plus the possessions in Northern Italy which were relatively close.

This wasn't so much France vs Austria, but more Bourbons vs. Habsburgs.
