Well, there's your problem. That's not the reason. The real reason is because if the USA had committed an overt invasion of North Vietnam, China would have most likely dropped their own proxy war pretenses and punched back in a big way.

The US thought they learned their lesson in the Korean War that pushing to capture the North Korea/Vietnam would trigger a Chinese response.

Also as time in South Vietnam went on, the guerrilla war quickly became a nightmare trying to hold down all the territory with the manpower available, trying to effectively tie down the entire north with that level of an insurgency going on was most likely beyond the ability of the US without committing substantially more troops to Vietnam, taking troops away from Western Europe and Japan to do so.

I get the general idea that invading NV would have sparked conflict with China I dont see how it wouldnt have ended the conflict in Vietnam if they completely took NV.

After the failed Tet Offensive SV communists where completely wiped out of officers and had no supplies/weapons or even soldiers left, the North competently took control of the insurrection after that. The conflict would have lasted but South Vietnam would be able to let the ARVN roam free and all that would be left Remanence of the NV army with no supply chain like they had before aswell as staging posts.

I would also like to point out that the SV Republic Army was more then capable of holding out on its though barely and only because the USA dumped so much money on to them. It wasnt till they stopped that the ARVN fell.
