Should Bruce Ismay have gotten on a lifeboat during the sinking of the Titanic? Did he have a duty as chairman/direction of the White Star Line to the passengers behind to not take up a spot on a lifeboat, or was he a passenger himself?
Titanic was an inside job

Well, it was poor showmanship, but I suppose it was beneficial that some official survived as to witness to the event. Can't really blame the bastard - it's not as if he was captain... He was rather instrumental in reducing the number of lifeboats - but again, did not do so beyond the regulatory limits, so a lack of foresight can be placed both on him and the regulatory commissions.
...and it's not as if he lead a pleasant life upon his returned, divorced, destitute, and eviscerated by the press. His last official act was to change the minimum number of lifeboats on all White Star liners well beyond the Board of Trade's minimum standards.
I lost some ancestors on that boat though... One side of my family might be quite a bit larger if he hadn't dun goofed, but I doubt the one spot he took up on his raft would have made the difference.

He wasn't even the villain of the story. He helped people get into lifeboats and went in one himself at the very end. To a boat with a lot of spare room.

I don't begrudge him getting into a boat, but there is a lot of evidence that points to the story of "there just happened to be lots of room and the officer in charge said it was fine and there were totally no other passengers in the area, so I stepped into this boat!" being false. Multiple witnesses noted that the loading of the lifeboat he got into was so violent it required the use of crew linking arms to prevent the mass of third class passengers who just now found their way to the boat deck from swamping it, gun shots were fired, and so on.
