I hate to sound predictable but I'd personally really like to see Gladiator remade as a historically accurate telling of Commodus rather than Ridley Scott's imaginary story about a general who "restores the Republic".

The idea would be too approach it like a horror movie instead of classic swords-n-sandals. Showcase the true horror of the Roman arena at its peak: thousands of animals and people being slaughtered for mindless spectacle. Showcase the banal creativity that went into ending the lives of criminals (men often not even given a trial). Show Commodus for who he actually was: a showman more interested in lavish spectacle than actually ruling his empire, who could shoot the head off an ostrich and sometimes fought in the arena buck naked just to be like his hero Hercules, much to the chagrin of basically any semi-literate person who thought that his displays were tawdry and tacky as fuck. Of course every match he fights is totally rigged and the gladiators are given wooden swords while he kills them at his leisure, obsessed with living out his dream of being a warrior-hero. Let the height of this movie be when Commodus has the Praetorians round up all the cripples and strap them into a large person-shaped device so that looks like a giant, but is actually made of a bunch of helpless people tied together, allowing Commodus to club them to death one by one and then proclaim that he killed the mighty giant, cementing how out of touch he had become after wallowing in all the death and mayhem.

The movie ends with a whimper: Commodus is drown in his bathtub by one of his wrestling coaches and a Christian willingly walks to this horrible end rather than convert, stirring the emotions of everyone who knows her

The premise would be if the movie Saw had a baby with the movie Quo Vadis. Quo Vadis was a lofty, theme driven story, Saw was visual horror, and that's what this would be a mix of. Thematic horror would be in something like untried "criminals" rent by lions or a deranged killer as society's heroic ideal or a sweet, innocent, teenager being raped to death by animals. To the Romans she's just another future-corpse bleeding out on the rape box after being force-fucked by a jack ass, something they've seen a thousand times. I dont think a whole show based around only the horrors of the arena would be too entertaining, or even topically representative. You had mostly non-lethal fights, plays, circus acts, literal rodeo clowns and races, the arena was more than a slaughterhouse, it is just that violence and death were so normalized to Romans that they saw a silly comedy as entertainment just like a lethal sword duel or an animal goring someone. It dehumanizes this audience too far and simultaneously removes the shocking aspect of the Roman bread and circus when it's not just another part of life. The common Roman would go see blood and fucked up shit and then relax at the baths and concern himself with menial shit, not too far from how you can tab back and forth between liveleak, fifty hentais and youtube videos of pets. What you have to remember is that the games were different things at different times, what they were in Augustus's day was very different from what they were at their zenith in Commodus's day.

The gladiators were prized investments and only about 1/3rd of the fights were lethal, but a games organizer who spared the lives of too many gladiators was seen as stingy. Yes, they had umpires and very strict rules regarding first-blood and they were treated like celebrities, but for the vastly larger number of lowlier dregs who didn't get to bang bored housewives, the coliseum was a death factory.

The horror would not necessarily be in the blood and guts, but how normalized it had become to the Romans who demanded a near daily amount of it.

Of course we did, and that technological achievement spurs social change, especially when technology renders a previous way of life obsolete and people refuse to admit it.

The concept of a warrior-hero which the Classical Europeans idolized so much was already a distant memory (of a golden age which never really was) by the time of the Roman empire, rendered obsolete by organized, professional state armies and by improving iron metallurgy which made it easier than ever to round up huge numbers of conscripts to throw into the grinder of war or to suppress labor riots. They were paying an obscene chunk of their GDP on the games recreating tales of the great warrior-heros of old like Hercules and Achilles and an equally large chunk on government bread, just paying for poor urban Romans to exist. They were living in an age of cultural delusion, and the rise of the monotheistic religions was a backlash to this delusion which gradually wiped away the detritus of antiquity.

From an early time frame Christians were painted as criminals and scapegoated for their society's myriad problems.

The Romans had this mentality that showing mercy towards criminals only encourages that behavior, and that by making their deaths as horrible, degrading, and humiliating as possible, you were discouraging that sort of behavior. This was very much a shame-based culture and anybody who lost "face" could face extremely severe consequences for their actions, even for relatively minor offences.

And there was a legal precedent for Christians being lawbreakers. Getting your trade license in those days meant going to the local temple and making a sacrifice in order to get your "mark" which allowed you to do your job. Of course this went against their Christian beliefs so anytime the authorities needed more bodies to feed to the public entertainment machine, Christians were easy targets.

It really had more to do with the dysfunction that their system of citizenship had fallen into and their stubborn refusal to change the status quo which resulted in an ever larger proportion of the economy being technically breaking some law. But when Caracalla finally did try to change it by making every one full citizens all he really did was fuck them over because now they had to pay taxes (which was literally a sacrifice made at the Temple of Jupiter Optimex) but they also had to abide by onerous Roman labor regulations. This made it easier to persecute Christians than ever.

But the consequence of going to this great lengths to persecute them had an opposite effect, spreading awareness of their existence and it garnering sympathy to their plight, especially when they were essentially being punished severely for simply existing.
