Why were the Romans unable to take Pictland? They were so BTFOd by the Picts they built a fucking wall to keep them away.

its not that they couldn't conquer it if they wanted to, its that they saw no reason that justified the expense of trying to hold it

they didn't really want to take Britania in the first place but pirates from modern day britain were raiding the coast of Gaul and they wanted to stop that. Although they also saw it as extremely glorious to cross a sea to conquer someone.

Gorilla tactics. Throw some javelins and retreat.

Actually it was to regulate trade routes and make some sweet dosh. If the romans wanted to build a wall to keep someone out, look at Constantinople

They did almost conquer Scotland/northern Britain at least once but were forced to withdraw to due conflicts elsewhere in the empire such as along the Danube with Goths.

That's not really true.

Britannia was extremely rich in raw materials, and while not an especially rich province compared to Italia or Aegyptus, it exported a staggering amount of copper, iron, tin, gold, and other metals. This was known before the Romans conquered it, as the Britons traded extensively with the Gauls and Carthaginians and others.

The Romans also didn't invade in one big expedition like they did in other places, coming in and just annexing the place straight away. Instead the first expedition (by Caesar) ended up setting up client states (and yes, stopping the coastal raiding), in order to facilitate trade and secure the frontier. It very quickly became apparent just how rich in raw materials Britannia was, so then later expeditions aimed at direct conquest were mounted, and the province annexed.

Britannia was one of the main sources of Rome's mineral wealth, equaling Hispania in abundance.

New to the thread, but

>The Romans also didn't invade in one big expedition like they did in other places, coming in and just annexing the place straight away.

isn't quite right, the Romans generally didn't just go on blatant wars of conquest gulping down places in one big go. A lot of the conquests by the Republic were done the way they did Britain, form trade agreements and alliances with the local chiefs, and when they call for help against their neighbors, move in and gobble things up, a bit at a time. That's how they took over Gaul, for instance.

I mean as opposed to the more famous Roman military conquests, like Carthage or Dacia.

Though I know what you mean that most of the Empire was conquered slowly, through diplomacy and hegemony preceding annexation than through direct conquest. It's just that when people think of Roman conquests, Carthage is generally what comes to mind, probably because it's easier to remember big battles than drawn out diplomatic manipulation.

judea as well, they had fought together with the Maccabees in the third mithridatic war so they were on good terms with eachother, then when the queen Salome Alexandra died in 67 BC a succession crisis between her two sons spiraled into civil war. One of the claimants, Hyrcanus, sent a letter to Pompey requesting military assistance to crush his rival and in return offered tribute, unfortunately the supporters of his rival were far more tenacious than expected and zealously defended Jerusalem. While the Romans did ultimately capture the city they then proceeded to brutally sack it. After the war was over Hyrcanus was installed as high priest, but Rome decided that the troops were going to stay and it was going to assume direct control of political matters.
