Why has Spain failed so spectacularly when it comes to creating a unified language and culture whereas France and Britain have, for the most part, completely centralized their governments and societies?
>>
Spain can't really do anything right.
>>
>>2326264
Basically this.
>>
>>2326259
>Why has Spain failed so spectacularly when it comes to creating a unified language and culture
Britain hasn't.Also the formation of Spain was based on tolerating the laws and customs of each region
> whereas France and Britain have, for the most part, completely centralized their governments and societies?
Britian is not centralized by any means
>>
>>2326499
>Britain hasn't.
u wot m8
>>
>>2326499
Most of the dialects of english have been wiped out
>>
>>2326499
>Britian is not centralized by any means

Until 1997 Britain was the most centralised state in Western Europe. Now it is one of them, granting limited autonomy to some of the individual nations within it.

>Britain hasn't

>what is Northumbrian
>what is Kentish
>what is Mercian
>what is West Saxon
>what is Cumbric
>what is Welsh

Pretty much all people in the UK now speak English, even the Welsh and Scots. British culture is virtually the same from Land's Ends to John O'Groates.
>>
>>2326536
>>Britain hasn't.
Scots,Welsh and Irish have their own parliaments and customs
>>
>>2326259
Because the rich parts of Spain are the ones with other languages. Catalonia was the only place with an industrial revolution. Spanish economy before modernization was really, really crude. Like, Spain was the place where other countries led their cattle to pasture. That was a high % of the GDP. Only Seville was saved from that thanks to the commerce with the Americas. Catalonia never had that problem. It was the connection point between Spain and the rest of Europe. The new ideologies and inventions went there first and 20-50y after that the rest of the country accepted them. You cannot unify something if the ones with economic power are the guys that speak another language and have another ideas about how to run things.
>>
>>2326596
only since like 1997
>>
>>2326596
They're a joke Anon. A joke designed to keep the peoples sated.
>>
Southern European nation states are failures, which is why Catalonia and Venice will attempt to regain their medieval glory, and fail, since they're Southern European. Not to mention Venice is literally sinking and there's nothing anyone can do about it.

fpbp

>Can't properly colonize
>Can't properly navy
>Can't properly handle rebellions
>Can't properly handle economy

>>
>>2326600
Castille held 70% of the GDP of the entire peninsula from 1200 to 1660 and Burgos was the wealthiest city in Spain until the XVIII century.Catalonia was a backwards shithole until the second half of the XVIII century
>>
>>2326259
>completely centralized their governments and societies
You say that like it's a good thing.
>>
>>2326639
>>Can't properly colonize
Well their colonies are more Spanish than Brittish colonies are Brittish
>>Can't properly navy
The Castillian navy was the strongest in Europe from the XIV until the XVII century
>>
>>2326625
At least the Dutch are sinking also
>>
>>2326918
no I didnt??????
>>
>>2326639
>Can't properly colonize
>Can't properly navy

Britain literally had 1/3 of their country break away and there are strong independence movements in two other regions
>>
>>2326596
But only a third of Welsh people speak Welsh. Same with Scots and Irish. The Celtic languages and customs are dying. This is coming from a Celt.
>>
>>2327041
>two other regions
whats the second? the welsh don't give a fuck
>>
>>2327098
>whats the second? the welsh don't give a fuck
Cornish and Northern Irish
>>
>>2327107
>Cornish
top fucking kek

norniron i get more but thats not independence, nor is it greatly relevant, won't happen for a long time due to the fact that the opposition is just as fanatical and generally the population has stopped giving a fuck about it nowadays.

the only feasible movement is in scotland, and even that is faltering.
>>
Catalan and valencian are different languages, that map is shit
>>
>>2327081
This as a celtboo makes me sad.
I thought there was a resurgence of welsh atleast.
>>
>>2326259
Britain has a strong independence movement in Scotland and also lost the majority of Ireland. They were only succeessful at transmitting their language.
>>
>>2326259

After the Independence War Spain was bankrupt, which did not allow for a homogenization process. Also Fernando VII and the church opposed the notion of nationalism, suppressing it for decades

After him his daughter reigned, initially opposing nationalism but shortly after accepting it, then the Carlists War happened and the state was severely lacking of funds, not being able to effectively propagate nationalist ideas to the people

Nationalism and homogenization process were not pursued until the end of the XIX century, with a severe lack of funds that didn't allow it to work well.

People living in those regions have real culture, unlike bongs and frogs.

>>2326541
this has to be bait. Has has has to be.

>Go to London.
>Go to Manchester
>Go anywhere in Wales
>Go anywhere in Scottland
>Go to one of the isles off the Main Land

Tell me there is no dialect. I'm not even talking slag or accents, there are differnt ways in which you pronounce things as well as parts of old languages Still in existence that have been assimilated into English.

Don't even get me started on all the other dialects of English that are spoken around the globe.
>>
>>2327381
Now that you put it like that.
>>
>>2327706
I mean like Scots as an independent language has been wiped out, like occitan in France
whereas catalan and galacian are still widely spoken
>>
>>2326259
France and Britain are dominated by London and Paris, which formed the heart of their respective cultural and economic centralization efforts over the past few centuries. London and Paris don't have competition within their countries like the way Madrid competes with Barcelona.
>>
When has spain not been in a civil war or btfo by someone else?

>rekt by carthage
>rekt by tutons/kimbry
>rekt by romans
>rekt by islam
>rekt by Portugal
>rekt by USA
>rekt by Germans
>rekt by communists

This doesn't include all the civil wars.

>Catalonia was the only place with an industrial revolution.

Literally all the coal&steel siderurgic industry was in the Asturias-Vizcaya network. Barcelona had the textile, and it was so fucking uncompetitive in international markets that had to live off Spanish tariffs on foreign textiles and have the Spanish market (and colonies, especially Cuba) as their only markets.

And that's post XIX. Before that, Catalonia was a shithole.

Well, there is difference between dialects and languages from other language families.
Dialect forms naturally according to the study of linguistics.

>>2326575
>British culture is virtually the same from Land's Ends to John O'Groates

Is it fuck.
>>
>>2327119

Northern Ireland is going to reach religious parity of voting age in a decade or so. A border poll will not be far behind that.
>>
>>2327724

Try telling the residents of Edinburgh or Belfast that.
>>
>>2326264

I wonder where are you from...
>>
Short answer:fueros
Long answer: the constant conflicts that spurred in Spain during the Age of Enlightenment and the control of the church avoided many important advancements in society, in Spain serfdom was still a thing till the 1860s and avoided any sort of transhumance. Emigration to the rich parts and abolition of fueros made the oligarchs push for a regionalist agenda (Vasconia and Catalonia) and even independence, with a resurgence in cultural movements seeking to protect the local cultures. Most Spaniards were able to speak Spanish, mostly due to the cities speaking Spanish because of higher education being in Spanish. In other regions, (Galicia) there was no immigration which meaned no mixing and no extinction of Galician.
