Why was Britain always a cultural backwater compared to Germany and France?

Britain wasn't a "backwater" but it was nothing compared to germany, italy, or france in terms of culture

They had their share of European history as everybody else. Knowledge and culture was first spread through monasteries, later through universities. Britain had both and plenty of them.
The real question is why Poland was always a cultural backwater. I mean, especially compared to Bohemia.

Germany wasn't that much better. Truth is, pretty much all of Europe and pretty much the whole world was uncultured compared to Italy and France. But it's largely due to Britain being sparsely populated for most of history.
