I think ideally they would have liked to take him alive so they could have a show trial for him in Moscow, but if he actually did join the fighting I doubt he would have been captured alive.

The reason he killed himself was that it was due to him being a coward and also giving one final middle finger to the allies. All those lives lost just to get to Berlin and what do they get? A dead leader that died instantly with no suffering at all.

Personally I would have strapped a bunch of explosives on my chest, hidden it under an overcoat, and given a soldier an order to detonate it if I was killed or captured. Then stood out in a street with a speaker and give a final speech to the world.

No body to parade, and a few less Russians.

The cult of personality can't survive if his body was to be discovered.

One of the reasons his memory infects so many is because all that remain are his speeches and visits which were carefully filmed.

That's why he committed suicide and had himself burned. He knew the image could only survive if he wasn't paraded around naked.

Just days before his death he heard the news of Mussolini getting beaten shit and pissed on and hung upside naked.

It would have been a national shame for Germany.

Not to mention it was somewhat cultural to suicide like the Romans when you failed. This way you were guaranteed not to be captured.
