I would like to discuss art.
We seem to be living in a time in which a staggering number of people wish to be recognized and legitimized as "artists", a phenomenon which most likely takes its origins from the 21st century's indefatigable suggestion that everyone must be unique™ in order to stave off the existential horror inherent in the realization that there are seven billion other people in the world who all look and think a lot like you.
In order to make some distinction (if a distinction indeed exists) between the Real Artists and regular shmucks who have a paint set and a Tumblr page, my question to you is this: What exactly makes art "art", and following this, what exactly makes good art "good"?

Yeah, I remember being in undergrad too

Please tell me why you disagree with my observation.

I don't disagree, it's just not interesting

I'm sorry to hear that, but would you like to provide your input anyway?
Consider "street art" for a point of contention among the art world. On one hand it appears to be frequently distasteful defacement of public property by amateur artists, but on the other it provides a glimpse of art at its most visceral and "real". There are millions of examples of street art throughout the world.
This leads us to an issue of categorization. Should we consider street art (and by extension, more unconventional forms of "art") to be contained within the larger sphere of ART and judge it on the same level as pieces by great masters and trained 'professionals'? This seems rather silly, so instead, perhaps we should assign different types of art their own category and judge them within their respective categories (such as we do with music or film, which are rarely compared with the fine arts).

I guess. You're not gonna talk or think yourself into being a good artist. Worrying about what category to put street art in or whatever is mental masturbation and literally a waste of time. Either make art or don't, that's how artists are made. You can't think yourself into being an artist.

I know that. I simply value opinions.
