His superiors approved the plan and provided him with a false identity card in the name of "Tomasz Serafiński".[16] On September 19, 1940, he deliberately went out during a Warsaw street roundup (łapanka) and was caught by the Germans, along with some 2,000 civilians (among them, Władysław Bartoszewski).[16] After two days of detention in the Light Horse Guards Barracks, where prisoners suffered beatings with rubber truncheons,[17] Pilecki was sent to Auschwitz and was assigned inmate number 4859.

Władysław Raginis, also known as "The Polish Leonidas".
During the battle of Wizna in 1939 his forces were able to hold off the Germans for 3 days, despite being outnumbered 40-1 and having no air, artillery, or tank support. Out of his force of 800, 716 were killed and 20 were captured. Raginis, badly wounded, refused to surrender, instead commuting suicide by throwing himself onto a live grenade.
