try to find some primary sources.

and THEN formulate a thesis on the subject

You probably don't want to dig deep enough, so maybe just read Beevors (or Beevers, sorry I don't remember) 'The Second World War', which is a general history of the war. Unfortunately you can't cram enough information into such a small book, so it doesn't really explain causes, events and conclusions in enough detail, but it gives a 'good enough' picture of the war.
There is much earlier (and maybe better) general histories, but there is nothing terribly wrong with Beevors/Beevers book either.
