What's a good book on the Thirty Years War for someone who only knows the basics of the topic?

Europe's Tragedy is usually thrown around here. Geoffrey Parker is another that's mentioned. Wedgewood is a third but she's outdated historiographically, though people commend her style.

Parker also has an essay on the military revolution that was taking place in Europe in the 15-1600's. Short read, but a great source on the topic.
I'm sure you could find a copy in a Uni library or online.

yea military history from that period is awesome, so i'd recommend it as well. the military revolution has become a very contested idea though, so op should keep that in mind.

The 30 years war name is thrown around here because of population decline, the first protestants going against the papists, and some dudes getting thrown out a window.
You'd be hard pressed to find someone who actually knows some firsthand accounts or references to the brutality though.
>coming from someone asking for someone to provide that, because youtube and wikipedia only provide generalities and political motivations

If you're interested in both the 30 years war and the German language there really is no way around the Simplicissimus. And that book has some serious depictions of brutality in it, despite the first bits being told from the perspective of an autistic retard.

>the first protestants going against the papists
There's easily a 100 years worth of conflict prior.
>firsthand accounts or references to the brutality
Read up on the Siege of Magdeburg
Otto von Guericke wrote about it; here are a few excerpts, there is a much larger text but im too lazy to find it

I have a copy of Simplicissimus in the original language. They even kept the slashes instead of periods as punctuation.
And I just can't read it. It's doable, but so very arduous...not enjoyable, having to read every sentence ten times over just to have an idea what the author is talking about.

There is a diary of a mercenary of the 30-years-war, the diary of Peter Hagendorf. Unfortunately it's only available in German.

This version is much more enjoyable

Thanks for the tip. It's a bit more than I can afford atm, but will keep it in mind.
