Were the Romans essentially ancient hillbillies? I keep in reading about the Julio-Claudian dynasty and there's a lot of stuff like cousin fucking going on. Then there's also ancient chariot races which are basically NASCAR.

Whats the difference between the two.

Hillbillies are the guys from Deliverance
Rednecks are the guys from King of the Hill

Seeing as I liked King of the Hill I guess they're ok with me. So long as they stay away from my smart asian daughter.

This would make an epic sit-com.
Two Romans in togas with banjos sitting on some white marble steps drinking moonshine, talking shit about the next race?

hillbillies live in the hills and are kind of self-sustaining and removed from society to a degree. Rednecks are southern farmers and other working class types, but these days the term is extended to include anyone from the south either as a mildly derogatory term or term of endearment (self-termed).

Not very, as they had a urban center of living for most of their existence (at least for the standards of the time). I am sure they had their country bumpkins though.

The Romans did live in hills though
