Spain wasn't relevant long before Fascist Spain and certainly play no significantly positive role in modern times. This is due in part with the collapse of their overseas empire through a combination of really dumbass leaders in an absolute monarchy followed by equally incompetent republics back to an even dumber king.

And before THAT time, Spain participated in many wars that drained its coffers and provided few real long term benefits. Regardless if they won or not.

Spain was in massive debt because Charles V paid literally world's worth of gold to get elected then Austria's and Empire's wars was funded by Spain, Spain was paying for 30 years war, wars against Ottomans, the 80 years war and more. After Charles II died off and Sun King's Grandson took the throne, they reformed the country and Spain became quite robust economically and was doing okay, even gaining territory and diversifying their economy.

Their inflation and debt problem was literally perpetuated by Habsburgs refusing to fix the country's economy and instead just selling debts away and let inflation grow because they were happy just pouring silver into any problem that showed up, tax only the poorest and let the aristocracy do whatever while the country slowly collapsed under its own weight.

Once it finished, there was 15 years of hungry. There was only possible to eat bread and some vegetabls (if you were lucky). At the end of the 60's Franco started to build some hotels and skycrapers at the Mediterranean coast, and it was the start of the cause of the economic crisis that it's in Spain nowadays, only living for the tourism and with no industry.

Spain wasn't a second rate power in the XVIII century. They defeated Austria and Britain multiple times. It is mostly a meme. The Spanish army was amongst the biggest in Europe (bigger than Prussia's or Britain's) and the Spanish navy was the third biggest. And the gold from America was never a big part of the Spanish economy. The economy crumbled when the Habsburgs just put all the economic weight of a huge empire in Castille alone
