What are some cool events that you think would make for a great movie?

Robespierre. Seriously, why the fuck doesn't anyone make a movie about his rise and fall?

the story of a family through the height of mycenaea, troy, the bronze age collapse, sea peoples invasions, exodus, the kingdom of judaea, its conquest and the return of the jews by cyrus, everything historically accurate and a possible natural explanation, including an explanation for the plagues of egypt

no big budget needed because it will be about commoners watching events unfold from the bottom of the heap, this also gives writers some leeway as they can introduce challenges for characters to overcome which affect them at a low level and don't contradict wider events

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Interesting_Narrative_of_the_Life_of_Olaudah_Equiano

The story of a man going from a free young man in Africa, to a slave in the Americas, to then working as a sailor all over the world.

I honestly don't understand why no one has turned this into a tv-show yet.

The history buffs would love it because it gives an opportunity to show off the entire world at that given period (just add a few episodes of him being in Antarctica, East Asia and Australia, who gives a fuck, the original was mostly embellished anyway).

And the SJW-crowd will love it because it shows a black man with a leading role in mostly white history.

On a somewhat similar note, a Star Trek style tv show following the voyages of James Cook would also be absolutely brilliant.

The British expedition to Abyssinia in the late 19th century. The British spent billions marching an army into the highlands of Ethiopia to rescue 3 hostages from a mad king, with loads of crazy Ottoman hi-jinks going on. Thematically the whole thing could work as showing the old world of inter-tribal warfare being swept away by the forces of modern warfare and empires. Emperor Tewdoros killing himself using a modern handgun gifted to him by Queen Victoria after his fortress is stormed would be a lovely climax.

Of course, Byzantium would make the best setting for a HBO series.
>>
>>2269810
Nezahalcoyotl would make a good movie, he had an interesting revenge epic.

That or the siege of Guiengola, it's got romeo-juliet type romance, glory, battle, mystical stuff, twists and it was pretty grandscale, the invasion on a Mesoamerican level. I think 100,000 Aztecs fought it in, including their auxilliaries.

So was King Baldwin, and most of the Christian cast for that matter. Even RIchard Lionheart for the 5 seconds he's there is presented as an amicable guy.

Vin Diesel says the only reason he makes shitty movies is because he hopes one day he can fund his dream movie of a historically accurate account of the life of Hannibal Barca.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vh1kuxrD0Vw (talks about it at the 4:00 marker)

Rabban bar Sauma was kind of like the Chinese Marco Polo. I think it would be cool to see what perspective they have of European society, especially since he was a Chinese-Mongol convert to christianity and spent his life creating diplomatic ties between the Mongol empire and Europeans. Especially interesting is how there was almost a Franco-Mongolic alliance at one point in history.

Been writing a script for a few years now about a biography of Friedrich II. I've written a lot about his life with dad and his Baron bro, and his love in London. I'm trying extremely hard to be historically accurate and going for film flair.

As much as I love Vin, no.

The BBC did a great documentary with Alexander Siddig as Hannibal and it was fucking based. Made me wish that it was an actual movie. Knowing Hollywood though, they'd get The Rock to play Hannibal and Scipio wouldn't even be in the movie. It'd just end with Hannibal's victory at Cannae or some shit, and then the end credits would talk about how "It took Rome a further twelve years before they were finally able to defeat the Great General." Then the end credits music would be the Terminator theme song or some shit.

a movie about that western marxist who was shilling for Pol Pot and denying the cambodian genocide and he ended up going over there to prove it. But his guards knew he would just be given a very regulated tour and that he wouldnt press anyone on the issue and just report everything was fine, so his guards killed him in order to make the whole world look at Cambodia and realize something was wrong instead of just listening to marxist shills.

the battle of jutland.

one of the largest naval engagements in history, probably as a ensemble piece with the four admirals and their staff as the four main viewpoints but with a german petty officer or seaman offering a lower decks german view. and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Cornwell providing a similar view from the british.

film could start with the build up to the battle, then the fighting itself while inconclusive had plenty of tension from the initial clash beatty running into the whole german fleet and running back, to jellicoe deciding to deploy on what was essentially a educated guess, to the germans sailing into the trap and running, the subsequent attempt to refind them the second crossing of the germans T the death ride of the battle cruisers and the night action, then the after reactions by both sides, the germans proclaiming a victory their commanders now is a illusion, the british frustrated by the lost oppurtunity, and beatty trying to undermine jellicoe.

that or a film about the BEF in the first few weeks of WW1, nery, mons, le cateau and the marne, again with views from both the lower ranks and the commanders on both sides

Did you watch the same film as I did?

The film opens with an evil Christian priest hacking up Balians wife's corpse and stealing his money and lying to him to try and steal his house (directors cut version).

Then we see the stupid Christian pissing where his friend is washing.

Then we see a preacher shouting that it not murder for a Christian to kill a Muslim but the path to heaven.

Then we meet the villain who is a Christian who not so subtly suggests he wants to kill Christians who want peace.

Next time we see him he leaves to attack a poorly defended merchant caravan and his face contorteds with extasy as the blood splashes over him.

Then the kind Muslim let's Balian go.

Then the king dies and the badge you becomes king and immediately gets his goons to attack another caravan where we're treated to more blood and a begging muslim man being beheaded followed by the murder (at least) of Saladins sister. In addition the Templars try to assassinate Balian because reasons.

Then the crusaders get BTFO and are in awe at ice in the desert. Saladin kills the goon Christian badguy but spares evil king Christian badguy because he's so noble.

Then there's a horrible siege and the Christian patriarch suggests converting to Islam to save the nobles while the peasants are slaughtered.

Saladin let's everyone go because he's so kind and noble and even picks up a cross that had fallen down.

Meanwhile the Christians can't leave the poor muslims alone and are getting ready for ANOTHER crusade.

Roll credits with some text directly referring to modern politics.

Just a mini series following the Migration Period of the Germanic Peoples. They're extremely important to European history, but the late Roman Empire gets all the spotlight because muh Rome. It'd be about either Goths contending with the Huns and eventually defeating them and their taking over of the Roman Empire, or Anglo-Saxons establishing their Shires out of Romano-Briton land.
All this of course needs to have totally accurate details, but something so incredibly important should be better known about, with the victors as the focus.

PELOPONNESE
historically accurate picture of life in classical Greece. All sides are depicted as morally grey: an Athenian keeps a young boy chained to his bed. A Spartan torments and murders a helot for his own amusement. Athens is a city in ruins, devastated by a plague and social unrest. Sparta is barely more than a collection of thatched roof mud-huts.

The plot revolves around how the hypocrisies of the democratic model were ultimately what led to Athen's downfall, how demagogues and comedians were influencing the discourse which ultimately lead to the disastrous campaign against Syracuse. It also revolves around the hypocrisies of the Spartan model, how their military doctrine had become stiff and unable to adapt to change and only barely managed to win against Athenian ingenuity, and only then because they were being paid and supported by the Persians.

The movie ends on a downer note: classical Greek civilization is effectively over, and they all soon will be conquered by the barbarous Macedonians.

Iran-Iraq War would make for some brutal and depressing shit

>The Iraqis heavily used Mi-25 Hind to "hunt" the Iranian troops in the marshes, killing many soldiers. On 27 February, Iran finally captured Majnoon Island, but lost 49 of their own helicopters shot down by Iraqi jet fighters. Fighting took place in waters over 2 meters deep at times. Iraq in response to the attacks ran live electrical cables through the water, electrocuting numerous Iranian troops and then displaying their corpses on state television.

Based 9's
I like how this serves as a perfect allegory for a lot of modern political situations, and the decline of empire in general.
>>
>>2276420
Clearly not.

The opening follows up with a nice bishop who cares for Balian and expressly wants him to recover from his depression. We're expressly told the problem from earlier was because it's a pissing match between half-brothers over inheritance.

The guy pissing in the river has absolutely nothing to do with him being Christian and just a mishap that sets him up to die when he goes off alone.

After the preacher we also see a kindly old pilgrim who says hello and is nonplussed about what road he's taking.

Guy is the bad guy, and set up to be the bad guy, but his confrontation has nothing to do with his religion and it's simply two political enemies shit talking each other. We see him be a bad guy throughout the film because he's an ambitious and arrogant asshole who barely mentions anything about religion. All his lines are about him putting on noble airs and winning personal glory.

The Muslim knight that spares Balian is first introduced trying to harass Balian and set his ghulam on him who was half dead and just wanted to drink water, and before that he was leading a raid on civilians that Balian delayed.

No one was awed after the battle, which started because Guy was an asshole and wouldn't listen to Balian because he's extremely jealous. Saladin kills Reynald out of revenge for his sister, nothing else. He spares Guy because he was humiliating him, talking down to him to not living up to the good (Christian) example of his predecessor.

The following siege and the patriarch's cowardice is juxtaposed with a Muslim Imam threatening Saladin with treason and forcing him into a costly attack because he's a zealot, and with his more noble younger servant who, among others, is knighted.

Saladin lets everyone go because he's had enough of the senseless fighting, and because Balian threatens to fight to the bitter end. He shows some chivalry at the end because he's the counterpart to Baldwin, who probably would have been respectful himself.
>>
>>2276420
>>2277644
In short, you're watching a different movie from what's actually there. You're taking every bad act by a character and conflating this with some anti-Christian narrative, all the while ignoring basically every other character that was good and also Christian: the bishop that didn't want Balian's wife's body mutilated, the Hospitaller, the crow's beak fighter in Sicily, the Ibelin knights, and so on.

And the Muslim side isn't presented as somehow better, but clearly shown to directly parallel the Christian side. They just never got any screen-time in comparison.

Baldwin was like Saladin, noble. Balian was like Imad ad-Din, virtuous, The Templar grandmaster was like the Imam, zealous.

If you missed the actual point of the movie, it's about faith and nobility versus zealotry and arrogance. It's view on religion and humanist leaning is anachronistic for sure, but Kingdom of Heaven is not anti-Christian or pro-Islam.

DESU the best historical movies are always based on novels. It's easy to come up with a historical event to turn into film but often the movies about history are adaptations of narratives that just happened to be set during a particular period. Sometimes the historical context is important to the story but sometimes it's not. That being said I'd like to see a film about the North African theatre in WW2, or maybe East Africa. Perhaps a film marketed towards English speaking audiences about an Indian soldier during WW2. Or a movie about the Arab revolts in Palestine during the 30s and leading up to the 1948 war. I recall reading a Leon Uris novel about it, it's prime movie fuel.

The life of Justinian II, the Emperor without nose. Come on guys, this movie practically writes itself.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justinian_II
>In 695 the population rose under Leontios, the strategos of Hellas, and proclaimed him Emperor. Justinian was deposed and his nose was cut off (later replaced by a solid gold replica of his original) to prevent his again seeking the throne: such mutilation was common in Byzantine culture. He was exiled to Cherson in the Crimea.

>While in exile, Justinian began to plot and gather supporters for an attempt to retake the throne. Justinian became a liability to Cherson and the authorities decided to return him to Constantinople in 702 or 703. He escaped from Cherson and received help from Ibusirus Gliabanus (Busir Glavan), the khagan of the Khazars, who received him enthusiastically and gave him his sister as a bride. Justinian renamed her Theodora, after the wife of Justinian I. They were given a home in the town of Phanagoria, at the entrance to the sea of Azov. Busir was offered a bribe by Tiberios to kill his brother-in-law, and dispatched two Khazar officials, Papatzys and Balgitzin, to do the deed. Warned by his wife, Justinian strangled Papatzys and Balgitzin with his own hands. He sailed in a fishing boat to Cherson, summoned his supporters, and they all sailed westwards across the Black Sea.

>As the ship bearing Justinian sailed along the northern coast of the Black Sea, he and his crew became caught up in a storm somewhere between the mouths of the Dniester and the Dnieper Rivers. While it was raging, one of his companions reached out to Justinian saying that if he promised God that he would be magnanimous, and not seek revenge on his enemies when he was returned to the throne, they would all be spared. Justinian retorted, “If I spare a single one of them, may God drown me here”.
>>
>>2277981
>Having survived the storm, Justinian next approached Tervel of Bulgaria. Tervel agreed to provide all the military assistance necessary for Justinian to regain his throne in exchange for financial considerations, the award of a Caesar's crown, and the hand of Justinian's daughter, Anastasia, in marriage. In spring 705, with an army of 15,000 Bulgar and Slav horsemen Justinian appeared before the walls of Constantinople. For three days, Justinian tried to convince the citizens of Constantinople to open the gates, but to no avail. Unable to take the city by force, he and some companions entered through an unused water conduit under the walls of the city, roused their supporters, and seized control of the city in a midnight coup d'état.

>Justinian once more ascended the throne, breaking the tradition preventing the mutilated from Imperial rule. After tracking down his predecessors, he had his rivals Leontius and Tiberios brought in chains before Justinian in the Hippodrome, now wearing a golden nasal prosthesis. There, before a jeering populace, Justinian placed his feet on the necks of Tiberios and Leontios in a symbolic gesture of subjugation before ordering their execution by beheading, followed by many of their partisans, as well as deposing, blinding and exiling Patriarch Kallinikos I of Constantinople to Rome.
