When I was in Cuba, there was a blackout in the hotel. A horde of poor cubans came to loot the place and then ran away just as fast. Lovely beaches, though.

Cuba used to be one of the richest and most developed countries in Latin America in the 1950s, but I disagree that it would have stayed so. The sexual revolution of the 1960s would have removed one of the main attractions Cuba had for U.S. tourists, which was its loose sexual mores, while the 1980s commodity crisis would have hurt its sugar and meat exports.

Not to mention that thanks to its location, Cuba could have easily become an station in the international drug trade, a deposit for drugs before they are sent to the U.S. If that happened, it would have become one of the most violent countries in the world, with dozens of thousands of drug-related murders every year.

I don't say this out of sympathy for the Castro regime, which is a failed state that only exists because they have a secret service with links to the Venezuelan and other Latin American regimes that send them money. It's just a fact, Cuba would be a shithole either way.

I think the point of the OP was that a 60% to 76% literacy rate in the 1950 was pretty fucking good. Look at the map, Cuba was on par with Spain or Greece. GDP per capita was also on par with Spain.

It is safe to say it would have achieved full literacy either way, it would be a First World nation today if it hadn't been for the Castros.
