You are now aware that Cuba would be a First World country if the Communist had not taken over.

You are now aware pre-revolution 1958 Cuba was already a relatively wealthy nation with near full literacy and had good healthcare standards for its time.

You are now aware all the so-called "achievements" of the Cuban revolution parroted by left-wing idiots were already present by 1958.

He was so shitty that even the US government wanted nothing to do with him. They cut off weapons shipments and aid to his government, US ambassador refused to take an official position on the war between him and the rebels, that's a big part of why he fell.

Funny how that bit of information never makes it into the stories of the Che t-shirt gringo faggots over here, or my retarded cousins in Havana.

You do know that Cuba's literacy rate in 1953 was 56%, right?

>>
>>2259162
Pre-revolution Cuba was a corrupt banana republic knocked over by the US. Not directly, of course, I mean knocked over in the way that if you have a fire extinguisher, somebody is burning to death in front of you, and you refuse to save them, then it's your fault that they're dead.

Then it got replaced by a new corrupt banana republic. Only this one, in addition to the pre-revolution torture and indiscriminate murder/oppression, also provides regular meals and literacy training. So I guess it's an improvement. Still an absolute shithole of a country though.

>>
>>2259487
You don't understand man, it's great that everyone can read and write! Makes it that much easier to toss them in prison if they write anything against the government.

I fucking hate how leftists over here trumpet Cuba's high literacy rate. Yes, it's nice that a poor agriculture-based nation has a literacy rate on par with ours. But somehow, we manage to have that without torturing/imprisoning anyone who disagrees with the government. Why can't Cuba do the same?
>>
>>2258351

>trusting statistics from Castro's government

In other Castro-approved news, racism no longer exists in Cuba! They solved it all the way back in 1970, can you believe that? Terrific stuff, the fact that the poorest cubans are all black, the richest are all white, and blacks get arrested for even going near the white tourist hotels is just a collection of strange coincidences.

Oh, and everyone gets access to flawless medical care, please ignore the hospitals that are literally "Bring Your Own Antibiotics" with rusty tools/tables. The economy is terrific, too! Those young Cuban girls prostituting themselves out to fat Canadians are just doing it because they REALLY want to hear some chubby beta say "ooh, soory eh" as he cums into them. Basic goods and services are plentiful too, Cubans just don't want to re-paint their homes because they really dig the old-timey faded aesthetic.

Viva la revolucion!

>Terrific stuff, the fact that the poorest cubans are all black, the richest are all white, and blacks get arrested for even going near the white tourist hotels is just a collection of strange coincidences.

I fucking love the way US leftists will protest the "institutional racism" of the US government, which had a black president, a black attorney general, etc., then turn around and say we should be more like Cuba, which has been completely ruled by whites, with blacks firmly at the bottom of society, from the very moment that "Cuba" became the name of the island. If the USA was 100% dominated by whites descended from one specific European group (Spaniards in the case of Cubans, I suppose it would be British for Americans), the leftist idiots here would have "literally shaken" themselves into a fucking coma.

FUCK OFF

sanctions don't make you throw people in prison every time they speak out

sanctions don't make you house nuclear missiles in your country and threaten to launch them at a potential trading partner, harming your own economy (you start that, you accept the fucking consequences)

sanctions don't make you build your economy on an unstainable system

sanctions don't tell you to trick innocent people in your country into thinking your country is "for the people" when it's nothing more than a generic run-of-the-mill republica falsa con caudillos that will slaughter anyone who tries to point out that we've gotten a pretty shit deal

I wish the gringos had annexed us 119 years ago. Things wouldn't be great, but at least my cousins wouldn't be begging for money/food and they could use the fucking internet or express their displeasure with the government without getting a lovely stay in that shitty torture factory of a prison on the outskirts of la habana.

How can you call yourself communist if the basis for your prosperity is commerce? And don't forget that the blockade was carried out by just one country.
>>
>>2259570
If you're going to be an imperialist power, don't fucking half ass it. I will never understand this about the USA. You conquer a place, saying all the while "oh, we want freedom" and yeah, fine, whatever, like half the major imperial powers have done that.

But then you don't even try to govern your new territories. You put JUST ENOUGH of a presence there to make them resent you, but not enough to actually keep control. Either you go all the way with it, the way the Europeans did, or you don't do it at all. This halfway bullshit helps nobody.

Cuba, Mexico, Panama, Honduras, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Iraq, Iran, Vietnam, China (US gave some aid, but not enough, to the KMT), Indonesia, and god knows how many other countries we don't know about would agree.
>>
>>2259641
So can we agree that not all US interventions were absolutely good or bad? You also can't point to a country and say how evil it is for supporting coups and dictators without looking at the context of the Cold War. Both sides did horrible things, but because the US emerged the winner all anger is directed towards them. And let's be honest, countries supported by the US are now better off than the ones in which the USSR intervened.

The cuban government took over american companies owned by american citizens. If that's not an act of agression, I don't know what is.

When I was in Cuba, there was a blackout in the hotel. A horde of poor cubans came to loot the place and then ran away just as fast. Lovely beaches, though.

Isn't Cuba pretty well equipped to deal with things like energy crises and financial meltdowns since they're so disconnected from the global economy and were forced to develop forms of self-sufficiency?

Being integrated into neoliberal capitalism will likely be worse for Cuba in the long run, other than for the access to foreign technology.

I'd take living in any of those countries, except maybe for Honduras and El Slavador, over Cuba any day. At least I'm allowed to say what I want, do what I want and leave when I want.
Also, keep in mind that Cuba was significantly wealtheir than any Central American or Caribbean country before the revolution (mostly thanks to US influence), so they had a big headstart.

Cuba used to be one of the richest and most developed countries in Latin America in the 1950s, but I disagree that it would have stayed so. The sexual revolution of the 1960s would have removed one of the main attractions Cuba had for U.S. tourists, which was its loose sexual mores, while the 1980s commodity crisis would have hurt its sugar and meat exports.

Not to mention that thanks to its location, Cuba could have easily become an station in the international drug trade, a deposit for drugs before they are sent to the U.S. If that happened, it would have become one of the most violent countries in the world, with dozens of thousands of drug-related murders every year.

I don't say this out of sympathy for the Castro regime, which is a failed state that only exists because they have a secret service with links to the Venezuelan and other Latin American regimes that send them money. It's just a fact, Cuba would be a shithole either way.

Before 1959 the official literacy rate for Cuba was between 60% and 76%, largely because of lack of education access in rural areas and a lack of instructors.[4] As a result, the Cuban government of Fidel Castro at Che Guevara's behest dubbed 1961 the "year of education" and sent "literacy brigades" out into the countryside to construct schools, train new educators, and teach the predominantly illiterate guajiros (peasants) to read and write. The campaign was "a remarkable success." By its completion, 707,212 adults were taught to read and write, raising the national literacy rate to 96%.[4]

I think the point of the OP was that a 60% to 76% literacy rate in the 1950 was pretty fucking good. Look at the map, Cuba was on par with Spain or Greece. GDP per capita was also on par with Spain.

It is safe to say it would have achieved full literacy either way, it would be a First World nation today if it hadn't been for the Castros.
