Why did Islam stop spreading east in Indonesia between the Wallace and Weber lines? Islam had been in Sumatra and Java for hundreds of years by the time of European colonization, but had never made it to Papua or nearby islands.

Race. People don't want to admit that the number one factor deciding why people do things is race. The racial spirit of the people east of the weber line isn't inclined towards Islam.

>Not giving a shit about religion
Pick one.
islam did spread there though
mollucas and the spice island had sultanates even back then
the answer is colonialism, timor were catholics because the portuguese and papua were protestant because the dutc held out the longest there until indonesian incasion of papua
Islam only spread where there was significant trade. Muslims were to dominant force in the Indian Ocean trade, so they had a strong influence in the areas that partook in it. Local rulers and elites were attracted to Islam since conversion tied them into Muslim trade networks, won them the support of their influential Muslim populations and ideologically supported their autnomy from Hindu powers like Majapahit.
Places without much trade, like New Guinea, but also large parts of the interiors of Sumatra, most of Borneo, and some parts of Java, never attracted Muslims to their lands and were never attracted to Islam themselves.
Trade and race
Islamisation of SEA follows the pre Islamic China-India maritime trading route spanning from Cham (Vietnam), Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Java, you'll notice that all of them later become Muslims
It is also worth mentioning that the ones who converted to Islam are Malayic peoples who previously embraced Hindu-Buddhism, thus shared language, religious, and cultural similarities between them greatly help the spread of Islam
Islam (and Hindu-Buddhism) never spread to east Indonesia since east Indonesia is basically composed of Isolated jungle tribes and Abos
