Factually, they didn't even try - but even if they did, they would have absolutely lacked the funds to do so. Even if one assumes that German scientists were thrice as brilliant as the people involved in the Manhattan Project it wouldn't have been enough because they were understaffed and underfunded. Throughout the war they didn't research on how to build nuclear weaponry, they were only researching reactor capabilities.
