Traditional military groups included cavalry and infantry, then came navy, and air force. Marines are pretty much the newest and represent semi-aquatic soldiers that combine water and land combat tactics. They're seen as kind of an early "special forces" group that were slightly more specialized killers than your average army grunt. The green berets in Vietnam would go on to become proper special forces in the US, but they were part of the Army and drew heavily on influence of marines in WWII.
