When poor people and workers moved to the city for opportunity. All the big wigs and rich people moved to the suburbs for these reasons:
Safety
Close to the city where good jobs are
More living space but not in the country with all the farm folk
Bigger houses
"Better" neighborhoods

Its only recently that cities have gained some attraction back due to the gentrification of the slums.
