There's this anecdote which might or might not be true, where American inspectors visited our prime minister at his home and were surprised by how sober he lived, and they were convinced we really were in deep shit

The Marshall plan was good for the countries it helped but it definitely wasn't selfless. Most of western europe was bankrupt and destitute which meant consumers had little money to buy american goods and more importantly, were at risk of socialist revolutions.

The Soviet Union and the states that would become its satellites were also offered the plan, but pulled out of it. I'm not sure whether the U.S would have allowed aid like that anyway, but this was just the very start of the cold war and when there was some chance of it not actually occuring.
