Was there ever a country in which life for the average civilian got better after it was conquered?
I'm not talking Rome vs Barbarians tier, I'm talking two well developed nations, where one loses the war and ends up better off as a result.

So After all, Germany won domination of Europe by loosing two world wars?

Of course. By losing the Second they allowed the Soviet Union to rise to become a great power, which then forced the U.S to rebuild Germany to be wealthier than it ever was before. Now Germany is de facto the most powerful nation in Europe. Obama has spent all of this year crowing on about how Germany is now America's strongest European ally.

Well carthaginian Hispania fared better under the romans, who promoted trade even further, developed in the interior and squashed the natives.
I think that counts, the carthaginians were right about the same level of civilization as Rome after all.
You could also make the same case for a good few places in northern Africa and the middle east. For every Cilicia there was a Cyrenaica really.
post 1453 Anatolia.
