I was very suprised when reading about the Reformation how sloth and dull the Catholics were at first.

The Catholics had grown weak and arrogant from such a long rule and hardly put any effort against the reformation.

The Counter Reformation had been much smarter, removing corruption, tempting people with art and setting up new helpful orders, but they acted too late.

What do you mean? They did what they had always done (which worked) when Martian Luther posted his thesis. They spent a few years reviewing his thesis, determining which were correct and which were heretical, then released a statement saying that while the majority of Luther's statements were correct/non-heretical, there were a few that were and they asked Luther to recant them and everything would be fine. Luther however was completely autistic and refused to to even consider the fact that perhaps even 1 of his thesis were wrong, and wanted didn't just hate Catholicism, but believed it was inherently wrong and wanted the catholic church as a whole to just dissolve. It's not like the Catholic Church could reconcile with a dude who wants you to stop existing.
