It was a military regiment just like any other, except on top of choosing to train a certain way to a certain level you also had to choose to be gay if you wanted to be considered for recruitment.

I haven't studied ancient history very much, but a prof told me that them being described as pairs of lovers doesn't necessarily mean that they were gay, just that they had a really strong bond. But he also said that them doing lots of buttfucking is very much possible.
