Was there any other precedent where former monarchs were victorious at democratic elections?

Yes, but he didn't become emperor much later. I meant people going the opposite way: from monarch to democratically elected leader.

Well, yeah. But his family was royalty before being citoyens and then becoming royalty again.
I can't find anyone who was an actual monarch and then a citizen and then a democratically elected leader though.
