Every nation has an army, but what are some examples of armies with a nation?
I'm not talking about military coup d'etats. I'm thinking of nations whose military is placed of much higher importance than everything else, like Sparta.
Rome, USA, Soviet Union, Zulus, indonesians, Mongols, Huns, and Denmark.

The military is literally subservient to civilians it's just held in high esteem.

Not him, but it really is. There are so many businesses around here, too, that refuse service to military. Also, it's voluntary.

Yeah during peacetime. Look at WWI and WWII. When shit gets real, USA will turn into a military society like the Spartans. Why do you think we have the ability to enable the Draft, martial law and Patriotic act?

That doesn't fit OP's criteria.
Any nation would naturally put defence over anything when they're at war.

So much 19th century spooks here, lyl. There were few divisions between civilian and military in earlier days. Even less when the government is concerned. Frankly the only one I can think of who made a distinction between Civilian and Military authority was Imperial China. Hell China before the Empire even.
You could consider feudal states led by meme warrior classes one. Since the whole set up was to maintain armies to protect the realm.
