It's been destroyed plenty of times. It even had to be rebuilt in Muhammad's lifetime (before Islam) after it was accidentally burned down by a pilgrim. It was destroyed by the Umayyads during a siege of Mecca after the city was taken by rebels, and then rebuilt in its current form (it was previously built of wood and stone courses rather than masonry). It was destroyed again by floods in the Ottoman period, and the current structure is their reconstruction. The black stone was also stolen and destroyed; if you look at it closely, it's not one stone but a number of fragments cemented together.

The kaaba is nothing but a big marker for the direction of prayer. In and of itself, it means nothing, just like the stone. We kiss it because it is the direction of prayer. Umar ibn Al Khattab RA even said to it "I know that you are but a stone, and if I had not seen the prophet kiss you, I would not pay you any heed."
