Academically speaking, Iranic people came from the north, around modern day Kazakhstan and southern Russia. They migrated south and supposedly spread the Indo-European language to central asia, Afghanistan, and the Iranian Plateau.
Today, people from the country of Iran are Iranians.

If you go by Zoroastrian scriptures in the Vendidad there is a place called Airyanem vaejah which is suppose to be the original homeland of all iranians/aryans.

It is said to have 10 months of harsh winter and 2 months of summer, so it could be anywhere north.
