Were colonial empires worth it ? Sure, they brought a lot of prestige bute were loosely controled, as Japan proved during WW2. Economically, Germany who barely have colonies was doing fine and was catching up the UK.
We got the banh mi sandwich out of the deal, I'm ok with it.
Seriously though, the Brits seem very proud of their empire, but at the end of the day, their empire was pretty useless against the Axis.

Some of them were profitable in the long run and extremely useful, but most of these were the earliest lands settled. By the time of the new colonialism there was never really enough time or good enough land to make the colonialism worth it economically. The only example of late colony I can think of being successful is Hawaii

Conquering all that stuff wasn't easy though. Britian could project its power, that wasn't the case for every european country. But in the end, those colonies were loosely controled, relied heavily on the natives cooperation. It's not about if it was impressive or not, but if it was really profitable.
