Nothing did. When you """discovered""" eastern philosophy, you just found the foreign to be exotic, that is all.

I see it really coming down to the focus on self verse community.
Just look at the huge ruckus over Obama saying "... You didn't build that ...". Technology is a reasonable extension of the western focus on self, as I need not rely on others if I have some gadget that lets me do it. This the west made huge gains in such empowering technology. While the east focused more on the development of the community. China once had a huge complex national exchange for shit, literally human manure. It was complex and helped deal with sanitation and food security. When westerns saw they thought it was beyond stupid. The west was solving the same issues with indoor plumping which contaminated the water supply and required a whole secondary infrastructure just to make the pipes and gentrified areas.
Simple fact is no one is completely independent of the world. And anyone who yields all to the world is nothing more then a foolish slave.
The east had many humanitarian issues as a smart selfish person could easily cheat such communal systems, so warlords were not unheard of.
Really neither way is right or wrong at its core, it is more of how extreme is it done.
