I've gotten into Finding your Roots recently, and I learned something really interesting. The status a mixed race child depended on the status of the mother. If she was a slave, the child was a slave. If she was free, the child was free. Wanda Sykes' family had been free blacks since the 1600s because a white indentured servant had a baby with an African slave.

I live in an area that has a large black population and obviously the dark skinned ones make fun of the light skinned. But the light skinned arent ashamed of it and often make fun of the dark skinned more than the other way around.
I hear the draker ones getting ragged on way more. Thats just my anecdotal experience.
