Japan claims they won a war against Russia. Are they telling the truth?

...yes? The Russo Japanese war? Seriously, is your Google broken?
Their aborted invasion of the USSR in WW2 was not very successful, though.

Russo-Japanese war of 1904-1905
Not like beating the Russians is very difficult
the Russian empire and military was breaking down, and the logistics considerations were insane. The rail network to Siberia was much less complete than it would be a few decades later.

the defeat was not as complete as many anons here and some mainstream historical writings on the subjects would have you believe. the japanese economy and military was nearly at the verge of exhaustion and they got lucky that the Russians decided to sue for peace in order to send troops back West to crush the 1905 revolution

That poster is right. Obviously Japan's naval victory were overwhelming, a complete embarrassment for Russia, but on land the Russian colossus and her immense reserves of men were beginning to overbear what Japan could hope to repel.
It's why Japan ultimately accepted a peace treaty that granted them very little of what they hoped to gain from the war in the first place. In the minds of some Japanese hardliners it was a total disgrace on their part. They had, in their mind, totally won the war and T. Roosevelt had conspired with the Russians to rob them of what was rightfully theirs by virtue of their victory.

The 1905 rebellion was directly influenced by the expense and humiliation of Russian defeats.
Mukden was a disastrous loss for the army of the Tsar.

This is all true. There was no way the Japanese could ever win a prolonged war against the Russians, and by 1905 they were just as eager for peace as the Russians.
That doesn't change the fact they were spectacularly successful against the Russians, that they destroyed their most modern ships and killed most of Russia's best naval commanders and managed to completely humiliate the Tsar.

Defeating the Russians isn't hard. Conquering Russia on the other hand...
