The problem was that the system was too fragile to handle all the shit Gorbachev was throwing at it. The Soviet economy hadn't been working well since the 60s, and definitely failed to meet the lofty goals at the time of beating American living standards by the late 80s. It would have taken a world-class statesman to unfuck the country, and they didn't have that. They had the Gorb.
