Why are totalitarian ideologies like Nazism and Communism, which have brought so much suffering and destruction to the world, still so much popular among common people? What drives a rational, sane person to adopt such way of thinking?
>>
people admire big man with big stick with well defined rules and well defined punishments

liberal democracy boring inoffensive and milquetoast

Good times create weak men.
Weak men create bad times.
Bad times create strong men.

They aren't.
What drives a rational, sane person to adopt such way of thinking?
Problems that liberal democracies are unwilling to acknowledge and unable to solve because of liberal insistence on personal liberty without responsibility towards society.

Also
>communism
>totalitarian
It's a branch of liberalism created by viewing the employer-employee relationship as exploitative and oppressive.

Dictators generally come to power through a positive message of social change that appeals to the people. They don't advertise all the bad things they're going to do, and often honestly intend to be good leaders at the time they come to power.

Hitler didn't tell the Germans that he was going to round up and execute civilians or simultaneously go to war with every other major power in the world. Lenin didn't say that millions of Russians would starve in famines because of failed central planning. Pinochet didn't talk about the free helicopter rides.

They just tell the people that things are shit right now and that they'll make things better, but need absolute power to do so. And if things really are pretty bad, the people tend to be willing to give it a try.

If you have a look at how much havoc "the West" has wreaked on the Middle East in the past century, I dare say it's not a problem of totalitarian ideologies alone.

Little, thats why they are popular amongst people who value their feefees over rational data.

they think their ''true version'' of said ideology will work this time

Because maybe it isn't so irrational and insane and you're parting off of the wrong premises?

Communism is not totalitarian "in theory", and the theory is what is popular, not stalinist russia.

>Why are totalitarian ideologies like Nazism and Communism, which have brought so much suffering and destruction to the world, still so much popular among common people?
In what way are they popular? Could you elaborate? I don't think that 1930s-style fascism and communism hold any sway among anyone but the poorest/most anti-social parts of the population. Both modern "far-right" nationalists and modern "communists" who have any power are all essentially democratic capitalists, they all are extremely moderate compared to nazis and commies of the 20th century. Are you one of those Americans for whom fascism and communism are examplified by Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders?
>>
>>2036526
>so much popular among common people

False premise, there are barely any commie or fascist working class people in the developed world. A lot hold some low level commie or fash ideas (being racists or wanting free handouts) but that's just plebs being plebs, otherwise they have no idea what those ideologies are about.

Most of self-professed fascists/nazis/communists are edgy middle class youth who desperately want to be unique and rebellious.

>>2039331
>and the theory is what is popular among commies

fix'd

The rest of us view fascism and communism through the lens of achievemnts of fascist and communist parties.
