I've been thinking lately.
How different things would be if the Ottomans took up Christianity?
Would they have collapse?
Would they have been considered a continuation of the Byzantine/Roman empire with a new dynasty?
I think the Balkans would have been a lot less messy, and maybe there wouldn't have been such an outcry for independence.
>>
They probably would have made easier alliances and been an even bigger nemesis to Persia.

>Would they have been considered a continuation of the Byzantine/Roman empire with a new dynasty?
The pope once offered this them exact deal so yes.

>I think the Balkans would have been a lot less messy, and maybe there wouldn't have been such an outcry for independence.
Serbs and Greeks probably still would have hated it.
Croats would have become Ottoman collaborators of the highest order.

Why would they do that?

It really depends when the Ottomans adopt it in this scenario desu.

Depends what denomination. If Orthodox they'd be another pseudo Slavic shithole, Catholicism/Protestantism might've truly turned things around.

If you look at history from a non-biased perspective, you will find that Abrahamic religions in the Middle-Ages were hardly anything but declarations of a political nature. It was not everyone having a certain religion that was the source of unity in a certain alliance. Political quasi-unity was expressed through religious means. When people took up Islam, they said 'All right, we accept you as the faction we will strive to acquire and distribute our resources together and we will pay our taxes to you etc'. It was the same with Christianity in Europe. Do you think all those wars were about "faith"? No. When someone had enough of the current relations of power, they created their own brand of Christianity as a means of saying "We won't pay taxes to the pope anymore and we are our own thing now, but in case there is a conflict with some even more external player, we will still ally with your group". The reformation is the most perfect example of that. The Shia/Sunni "religious" conflict was the same thing, they had some beef over who was gonna be Caliph, at first these denominations were purely of a political nature, then they, as most political aspirations in the Middle-Ages, got wrapped in a veil of sacrality.

So basically, the Ottoman Empire becoming Christian, apart from being an utterly impossible scenario, would have signified a political submission to Europe of a sort, something that would have been purely decided by political and economical factors. Also, it would have meant losing pretty much everything beyond Turkey itself. You didn't clarify which sort of Christianity you were talking about, either, and since we are talking about political spheres of power that were often opposed, this would be important.

Makes sense. Really changes the way i think about religion in the Middle Ages.

The strange thing is this really could have happened

>>Yahya (1585–1649) was the third son of Ottoman Sultan Murad III. His mother Elena was a princess from the Byzantine Komnenós dynasty of Trebizond, a surviving branch of the Byzantine imperial family of the same name from Constantinople. When his brother, Mehmet, became Sultan, he followed the Ottoman custom of executing all of his brothers (potential rival claimants to the Ottoman throne). Yahya's mother was concerned that this could also eventually happen to him after the death of his father, so he was smuggled out of the empire, first to Greece, and then to present-day Bulgaria. He was then supposedly baptized at an Orthodox Christian monastery, where he lived for the next eight years of his life.[1]

>>Eventually, Yahya's two older brothers died, but in 1603, since Yahya had escaped the country to avoid fratricide, his nephew Ahmed I (the fourth-born) became Ottoman sultan. Yahya believed that as the next oldest son of Murat III, he was next in line to be Ottoman Sultan and felt cheated out of his rightful destiny. He would dedicate the rest of his life to gaining the Ottoman throne. However, the standard Ottoman practice at the time for determining the succession was not birth order of sons; instead the Ottoman laws of succession to the throne stated that after the death of their father, the Ottoman princes would fight among themselves until one emerged triumphant.

>>From 1603 on, Yahya made frequent trips to northern and western Europe to gain support for his claim to the throne (visiting Florence, Madrid, Rome, Kraków, Antwerp, Prague, and other cities). Between 1614 and 1617, he schemed with Serbian Orthodox Christian bishops in Kosovo and Western Roman Catholic bishops and leaders as part of his strategy to gain the Ottoman throne. A few years later, with the assistance of Russian and Ukrainian cossacks, he led a fleet of 130 ships and unsuccessfully attacked Istanbul.

Pretty much. You've got to remember that Roman emperors had come from all over the world. There had been Berber, Spanish, Syrian and Illyrian emperors. A bunch of "Turks" who were really just Muslim convert Greeks turning back (as the Church would see it) to Christianity would be acceptable as the continuation of the Roman Empire. Hell even today i'd expect us to still see them as Rome if they'd kept many of the traditions going.

They would have been Hellenised. They also wouldn't have lasted, because without enslaving Christian boys they wouldn't have the number one source of stability for their regime, the Janissary corps.

Or we meme on them like the HRE

They could enslave Muslim boys instead
>>
>>2031704

If they did that then sure they'd survive. But the Byzzies didn't practise wholesale slavery of their minorities, they preferred (pagan) Slavs.

They did have a tradition of keeping captives and converting them, then letting them fight and lead troops in battle.

They would have become Byzantium 2.0. If they took up Orthodox Christianity, they probably would have become hellenized because Greek would be the language of the Church and therefore, learning in general. Regardless, the turkification of Anatolia probably wouldn't happen, native Christians wouldn't flee to Europe.
