How much is the modern American political divide derived from the matter of slavery?
Not much

The states that used to have slavery are now backwards shitholes with white people as a minority, which is ironic.
Basically the same partisan divide, except the parties have now switched ideologies.
If slavery were still around, republicans/conservatives would be strongly supporting it under the guise of "the individual states should decide for themselves".

Largely this.
Thanks to Reagan, though, our "left wing" party has been dragged to the right. The Democrats are essentially conservative, in that they want society to remain mostly the same, while today's Republicans are outright reactionary.

If they're so dumb, how come you can't get them to do what you want?
