Saqifa was essentially a coup. Abu Bakr was pushed to take leadership by a handful of "elders", while Ali (a credible candidate) was washing the body of Muhammad. The point of the caliph is to be righteous and having him be chosen from among the Ummah by the Ummah is a better way of doing this, at least the best way available to men as the true best way would be to be appointed by Allah as Muhammad was.

He was the rightful fourth Caliph. Not only did he not contest the dominion of the three caliphs before him, he named some of his children after them. The idea that him and his future progeny would have an unbroken line of religious leadership is farfetched and disrespectful to the legacy of him and his kin.
