The tl;dr is that the crown kept the colonies on a really long leash as a matter of practicality and when they started trying to exercise more control the people in the colonies - led by a group of the landed gentry - said "fuck off; we don't need you any more".

That's pretty accurate. The colonies had mostly been left to themselves, but the cost of the seven years war made the British increase taxes and trade regulations so they could manage their debt better. Colonists didn't like what was perceived as new and unfair intrusions, and a number of people were able to capitalize on that and build up support for a revolution.
