Was the Holy Roman Empire simply a case of Stockholm syndrome?

Uhm, stockholm syndrome works the other way around.
The Romans would have started thinking they were Germans.
That's not what happened, and that's also not what Stockholm syndrome is.

Your arguments for a Stockholm-syndrome are not correct, but for the sake of argument I would actually argue, that it is kinda like a Stockholm-Syndrom.
This would stem from the believe, that the Roman empire would be the last empire before the apocalypse comes. Therefore people were trying as much as they could to keep that empire alive, thus >Holy Roman empire.
And in the end, they identified as the heirs of the Roman empire.
So, to have it in a simplified manner
>Romes annihilation threatens the world
>Oh holy fuck no!
>Start to identify with Rome
>Start to want to be like Rome
So, in a very simplistic sense, you could call it a Stockholm-Syndrome, but not really.
