Is the ERE the only empire ever to decline for its entire existence?
>>
>>2010413
Heraclius, Justinian and the Macedonian dynasty all saw resurgences of their power.
They may be the only country to have ever been conquered and ended by its own ruler though. (Demetrios, who along with his brother served as the last co-rulers of Byzantine territory of the Palaiologan dynasty, defected to the Turks and helped conquer the last bastion of Byzantine rule in Morea)

>>
>>2010501
The Eternal Kraut trying to pretend their meme empire was the real Rome and the ERE wasn't.

The name just stuck over time because it neatly describes a time when the ERE was confined to this general area, spoke Greek, had its capital at Constantinople and was the hub of Orthodox Christianity.
>>
>>2010511
By that token any successor state that is smaller than the previous state is a "pathetic remnant".
It lasted for a thousand years man.

>>2010501
Historians haven't really differentiated them for a long time.

But their contemporaries did. Often calling the eastern empire "The Empire of the Greeks", rather than Romans.

Although this doesn't exactly put it in a great club.

The amount of current countries that can claim to have lasted a thousand years as an independent nation with the same type of government are...
Denmark, Ethiopia (Monarchy that now no longer exists, but was around for a thousand years with a bunch of emperors who could ALL trace their lineage back to the same guy.), and Japan if you're being super fucking generous.

France didn't make it, just as they were reaching their millenial anniversary they had the revolution.
The UK had that brief stint as a military dictatorship they'd like to pretend don't count. (If we don't count that, then I guess we can add "England" to the list)

>Henry VI decided to take advantage of his father's threat of force against the Byzantine Empire, affected by the rebellions in Serbia and Bulgaria as well as by Seljuk incursions. Emperor Isaac II Angelos had maintained close ties with the Sicilian ursurper king Tancred of Lecce, he was overthrown in April 1195 by his brother Alexios III Angelos. Henry took the occasion to exact tribute and had a threatening letter sent to the Byzantine emperor in order to finance the planned Crusade. Alexius immediately submitted to the tributary demands and exacted high taxes from his subjects to pay the Crusaders 5,000 pounds of gold.

Ferdinand renounced his claim to the Kingdom of Hungary and was forced to pay a fixed yearly sum to the Sultan for the Hungarian lands he continued to control. Of more symbolic importance, the treaty referred to Charles V not as 'Emperor' but as the 'King of Spain', leading Suleiman to identify as the true 'Caesar'.

>>Ferdinand was to be considered as the King of Germany, and Charles V as the King of Spain, and they were equal to the Grand Vizier of Ottoman Empire. Moreover, they were banned to count anyone as 'Emperor' except the Ottoman Emperor.

ACTUALLY THERE WAS.
That's what's so super weird.
You wouldn't think that would be a thing that far back, and in such a decentralized state. But it totally was.
Heraclius EXPLICTLY made Greek the language of the state, after Justinian desperately tried to maintain Laitn as the language of the state and law.

And, as for many other things, Diocletian had actually made what was a long held informal institution an official one too. By officially supporting Latin over other regional languages.

Otto III is the first ruling King of the Romans, whaddaya know?

>>2014248
The HRE was around from the 10th (Heck, I'll even give you 9th) century, to the 19th century.

Rome was partitioned in the 3rd century, we can talk of a separate Eastern Roman state in the 4th, and Constantinople fell in the 15th century.

So yeah, slightly faster. I just got it the wrong way around. The HRE fell faster.

Basically, i concede the point, but if both are going to be viewed as Rome's successors, the one that success's Rome the furthest in time is the "winner"

none of these are really quantifiable because there is really just a start and an end. otherwise, you can only postulate on abstract criteria for when they're "basically" finished.

They brought silk to the west. Silk, being a luxury item, is the first really profitable textile industry product. Most people back then were capable of making their own clothing, so they had no reason to buy cheap stuff. Silk on the other hand could be bought and sold as a status symbol.

Prior to this, the Romans tried to ban the silk trade because it was causing a net capital deficit, and filling the coffers of the Parthian/Persian middleman. They even tried to rebuild the Nile Canal to get around it.

Just as stolen Greek texts jump started the Italian Renaissance (The Greek Renaissance was first), the stolen silk worms sowed the seeds for the industrial revolution. They also invented the flamethrower. Nuff said.
