What's the deal with the Sphinx?
>we have no Egyptian name for it
>everything we know about them comes from Greek sources
>the Sphinx has an entire history and backstory in Greek myth despite being an Egyptian icon
>the city-state Chios (in Anatolia) had a Sphinx for its emblem
>we know absolutely nothing about the Shpinx from Egyptian sources

It's a mystery wrapped in an enigma.

The Egyptians knew it was just an odd statue of one of their Pharohs, and in later times it was buried in sand and forgotten.
literally ancient Aryans
If I'm going to guess, it's representing some sort of gatekeeper to the next world, seeing as the pyramids represent the power of Egyptian society(e.g the social hierarchy), but also death since they are tombs.
As far as I know, when you died in Egyptian mythology, you were asked as series of questions before being allowed through the gate into their Heaven, and depends on how you answered you would be admitted or not.
It wouldn't surprise me if the Sphinx represents the gatekeeper who asks questions, because he is a cross between a man and a cat, and we know that cats were the guardians of the underworld.(So he stands between the here and now, and the hereafter).

The sphinx was a commonly depcited mythical creature just like the cherubins or the gryphons which had an even more well consolidated/coherent iconographic tradition (for instance Scythian and Daunan gryphons look almost exactly the same)

We don't know for sure that the Sphinx and pyramids were built by the Egyptians. They put their pharoahs inside and wrote all over them, but that doesn't mean they built them.
Carbon dating only applies to the organic material inside the pyramids, not the stones. We have no idea how old the structures themselves are.
