I've got a question that's been bugging me for a while

How come there's basically nothing left of Ctesiphon, or any other major Sassanid cities for that matter? There's the ruins of half a palace and that's all that's left of a massive city of hundreds of thousands, plus the capital of one of the two strongest empires in the world at that time.
I get that the Arabs made Baghdad their capital after their conquest, but how come Ctesiphon pretty much just vanished whereas Rome at least has more substantial remains?

Rome was occupied and built upon by later states and rulers, whereas Ctesiphon was completely depopulated. After the Arabs conquered the place and the royal family, nobility and important people all got the fuck out of dodge, everyone left because there wasn't any economic or political worth left. Caliph Al-Mansur also later dismantled a lot of the ruins and used them for building material elsewhere. After years of abandonment, salvage and battle damage the Taq Kasra is pretty much all that's left.

How about other cities? Surely the Sassanid state had hundreds of urban settlements like the Romans did, but I struggle to find much surviving architecture from the period
