That would be much harder to pull off in moderate-secular countries. People are more likely to jump between extremes especially since communism was shit.
Russia isn't religion heavy, they are trying to bring it back in attempt to heal Russia's alcoholism, drugs problem and broken families.

Orthodoxy was kind of mixed in the soviet union. They wanted to eradicate it but when they tried the commoners started to get rebellious. Eventually it just became an ignore and hope it goes away kind of deal.

Compensation. Communism and atheism were the most important things in life, and when they disappeared, they had to be replaced something else. Missing out so much in peoples' lives, religion fought twice as hard to recapture their flock.
The cultural war showed that communism is the loser. And communism promoted atheism, therefore, atheism is in the wrong as well.
Also, the nationalism that can be found in communist propaganda continued after the regime changed, but with religion as a proof of the nation's glory and victory over the decadent West
