He didn't really play a huge part in the prison camps and was purposely misled by the Secretary of Defense into thinking Japanese Espionage was actually a big problem. As for the cousin thing, she was a distant cousin if memory serves, so it is not that weird.

He also did a lot of good, like mobilizing the American economy both in war and peace times, rebuilt and build infrastructure across the country, and won what is, for the most part, the last war where America was seen as a grand and heroic country fighting for democracy and freedom (likely do in part from propaganda at the time, also literal fucking Nazis).

Read what happened to Asian-Americans who got deployed to Vietnam. Keeping the Japanese separate from the rest of the population during the war was honestly more humane. They were protected from anybody who might want to lynch them during the war.

You have to weigh a presidents accomplishments against their mistakes.

FDR got to make more mistakes than most, because he made more accomplishments than most.
