Is and was the western and southern catholic slavs doing better than their eastern orthodox cousins, if so, why?
Saw some jib jab about it in another thread and it just got me wondering.

If the Russians and Anglos didn't cut the Germans down to size twice in the World Wars West Slavic languages might be extinct by now.

Uuuh, no

Doubt it. Don't be a tit and stay at the topic at hand.
Many thanks, OP.

Right now? Sure, but it's because they are small countries bordering Germany, Austria and Italy so they get to leech off that wealth.
Historically, I know Bohemia did fine for itself but I don't think they were much more successful than the orthodox states, who suffered quite a bit from the Ottoman incursions in Europe anyway.

Well, they might still be around but critically endangered, like the Celtic languages.

Slovenia is doing really well because it avoided war for the most part. Not just the Yugo wars, but avoided major destruction in general and didn't endure the Ottomans. So Slovenia had the advantage of being richer from the get go, and avoiding war, as well as having a head start in economic transition and reform.
Poland is also doing well, however it is being aided by the west as a future regional power/precaution against Russia.
Croatia is doing somewhat well, but looking at Slo, Cro and Serbia in all 3 cases the differences are staggering, and are related to previous basis and the time at which the transition started. As both of the latter countries had their economies hampered by the ongoing war, intentional sanctions etc.

Serbia was not only in bad shape already, but in 1999 NATO bombed 3 years worth of it's GDP, and sanction, and further delay on economic transition, which only started in late 2000. With heavy damage from previous sanctions Serbia was thrust into economic change with a very damaged base.
The Serbian economy today is still about 75% of what it was in 1989, and it has tripped in size from 2000 to 2004.

Now, Ukraine on the other hand has it's own multitude of issues, among other corruption, politicians always having shady deals with oligarchs and Russia, etc.

As for Russia it has a myriad of geographic challenges, oligarchs, corruption, and it's over reliance on the energy sector has cost it dearly.

A big part is also the lingering communist mindset.

Because outside of forty years of socialism that has shaped the common perception of most of those countries, most of them have spent the vast majority of their existence as part of what we now call "West", as in European, Catholic/Protestant, part of or close ties with the HRE, humanist tradition, industrialization and so on and so forth. Look at the likes of Bohemia and Poland (also Hungary, it is not a ethno-linguistic phenomenon) or Slovenia.

True

Yes! That was the picture I saw in that one thread

Except for Slovenia apparently.

Slovenia wasn't touched by any of those.
