Sure, technique may be objectively valuable, but music is inherently subjective, so it doesn't really matter. This is, unless you only care about what what is objectively valuable, in which case, you're sort of missing the point of music.
Personally, I appreciate technique, a lot actually, but it can only go so far, there has to be soul in there somewhere.
Besides, I can think of lots of bands better than Tool if you want to masturbate over technique.
